Wrexham Solar Farm - Hydrology

The planning application for this solar site required a Flood Consequence Assessment and a Surface Water Management Plan.  With part of the site lying in Flood Zone C2, hydraulic modelling was used to investigate the impact of the flood plain interventions (solar arrays) on flood levels; it was found that the small increases only affected the site, with no off-site increases.  Our drainage appraisal suggested that whilst the impermeable infrastructure on the Site would lead to locally increased runoff, there would be no increase in runoff due to the panels themselves.  Infiltration testing confirmed that the soils were not suitable for infiltration; the SuDS strategy therefore recommended attenuation basins for mitigating the increased runoff.  The flood and drainage Reports were favourably reviewed by NRW and the SuDS Approval Board.
