Corylus Enhances Flood Resilience for Historic Somerset Cottage

In response to recurring flooding events, including significant incidents in February 2013, December 2023, and most recently during Storm Henk on January 4th, Corylus was commissioned to carry out a comprehensive Property Flood Resilience (PFR) Survey for a Grade 2 listed cottage in Somerset. This historic property, vulnerable to flooding due to its location, required expert intervention to mitigate future flood risks.

Our highly experienced hydrologist, Dr. Webster, led the survey. His approach included precise level surveying and an in-depth review of storm rainfall data collected from a nearby Environment Agency rain gauge. Dr. Webster’s expertise allowed us to identify the most effective measures to safeguard the property against future flood events.

The tailored solutions recommended by Corylus included the installation of an extensive flood barrier, sump pumps designed to handle both groundwater and overtopping, and non-return valves to prevent backflow. These measures were successfully installed by Yorkshire-based specialists Andel, ensuring that the cottage is now better protected against the increasing threat of flooding.

At Corylus, we pride ourselves on delivering bespoke flood resilience solutions that are both effective and sensitive to the needs of historic properties. Our comprehensive PFR surveys are designed to provide clients with actionable insights and reliable protection against flood risks.
