The northern parts of the Chiltern Hills have long been synonymous with brick making. The Bellingdon Brickworks has been producing bricks since the 1920’s utilising locally sourced clay and brick earth from several small scale extraction sites to the north-west of Chesham in Buckinghamshire.
The bricks which are manufactured by H G Matthews at their brickworks in Bellingdon are used for restoration and conservation building projects within the Chilterns, but are also utilised across the country in instances where a high quality handmade bricks are required.
Corylus has worked with H G Matthews at a number of their local quarries in the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), where sympathetic extraction and restoration schemes are required in order to minimise the potential landscape impacts upon a very sensitive rural environment. The majority of extraction schemes are planned on a phased based, promoting a rolling programme of annual extraction and restoration to limit the extent of landscape disturbance at any one point in time, with the sites ultimately being restored to a mix of after-uses including agriculture, forestry and nature conservation.
